Reasons For Using Flannels For Babies

When you take your baby home from the hospital he or she will be snuggly wrapped in a cotton flannel receiving blanketThis will ensure your newborn is warm but not too warm.Cotton Flannel Fabric is woven and soft and fuzzy.  It will hold in heat but yet allows air to circulate cooling your baby.  Cotton is a renewable resource, from a plant. It will eventually breakdown and go back into the environment in a safe way.  The fleeces are most often made from polyester, an oil based product.  So when choosing receiving blankets for your new baby be wise and choose those made from 100% Cotton Flannel/Flannelette.  It is the ultimate choice for your newborn.

According to one Baby Blog a newborn needs a temperature of 65 – 70 degrees.  You should add one more layer of clothing than you are wearing yourself.  They need to sleep on a firm surface.  Swaddling is suggested for newborns to keep the baby tight and and compact as they were in the womb.  This will help them make the transition from the womb to the world.  Swaddling will keep your baby warm and on its back.

Swaddling Blankets

Dr. Harvey Karp talks about swaddling in his book “The Happiest Baby on the Block”.  He recommends a 42 inch swaddling blanket.  You should have 8 – 10 cotton flannel/flannelette receiving blankets in your nursery. You can sew these yourself and save several $s per blanket. On our How-To Page we give you free instructions.  Our 100% Cotton Flannel/Flannelette is a nice quality fabric in adorable prints and nice colors in solid flannels to coordinate with your nursery colors. You simply purchase your choice of print or solid in our popular Buy A Square option. This will give you approximately a 45 inch square of fabric to work with. You trim and square it up then hem by hand or machine.  Visit our How-To Page to make a flannel receiving blanket.
